Chemistry and Biochemistry

Chemistry’s fundamental discoveries at the molecular level have empowered the revolutions in science, technology, and medicine.

Degrees

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s faculty are dedicated to equipping students with the skills and drive necessary to succeed in their careers and meet the global challenges that humanity faces.  We offer a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry as well as minors in chemistry and biochemistry in a welcoming and inclusive environment.  These programs adhere to the rigorous curriculum standards set by the American Chemical Society, the largest scientific society in the world, and we offer the ACS Certified Bachelor of Science degree for students pursuing careers in chemistry.

Undergraduates perform cutting-edge research alongside our award-winning faculty whose work has led to patents and commercial technologies. Areas of research range from nanomaterials to drug discovery/medicinal chemistry to computational chemistry. These authentic research experiences instill in our students excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work well in groups—two key attributes sought by employers.

Chemistry is great foundation for a wide range of career opportunities. Careers in industry, government, and the academy involving research, education, and management enjoy low unemployment rates and high salaries. Chemistry training also extends to the legal and health professions, engineering, and other interdisciplinary fields. Learn more about what you can do with a degree in chemistry and visit our Career Blog to learn about out alumni and their diverse career paths.

Are you a STEM student interested in the pre-health professions and related fields?

Our biochemistry minor combines specialized topics from chemistry, biochemistry, and biology into a highly interdisciplinary minor. The biochemistry minor prepares students for a wide array of health profession careers including dentistry, environmental biochemistry, forensic scientist, food scientist.
