Student Career Services

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences works closely with the Magner Career Center to offer events and services designed to prepare students for a successful career. Through partnerships with employers, alumni, faculty and staff, the Magner Career Center develops programs to meet the specific needs of the students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Recent graduates of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences who actively prepared for their career by participating in internships and using the Magner Career Center’s services have found career success after graduation. Graduates since 2004 hold prestigious positions including Digital Associate Producer at NBC Nightly News, Senior Coordinator, Media Rights & Licensing Madison Square Garden, Program Quality Analyst New York Foundling, Care Manager/Care Coordinator at Diaspora Community Services, Director of Academics and College Readiness Row New York, Business Relationship Manager-eCom Services Globegistics Inc., Program Director at Good Shepherd Services, Editorial Assistant at Amazon Children's Publishing, Project Assistant at NIA Community Services Network, Immigration Services Officer at U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Audience Development and Engagement Manager at CBS Local, ‎Assistant Editor at Penguin Group USA, Speech Pathologist at Language Fundamentals Inc., and a Program Assistant at Gynuity Health Projects.

Internships and Employers

Through job fairs, the internship database, and internship panels, the Magner Career Center gives the School of Humanities and Social Sciences students access to internships and employers at a number of companies including NYC Human Resources Administration, Gowanus Canal CDC, Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator, NYPIRG at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn College Library, The Office of the New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, Jumpstart, NY State Office of Children and Family Services, Reading Partners, StoryCorps, Worth Publishers, SELF Magazine, Lipper Museum of Jewish Heritage, America Needs You, and Flatbush Tenant Coalition just to name a few.

Unable to afford to work an unpaid internship? The Magner Career Center selects winners from each school to receive internship stipends. Winners are selected twice a year, and students should apply the semester before they plan to intern.

Alumni Mentor Program

The Magner Career Center’s Alumni Mentoring Program pairs students with a mentor in their field of interest. Mentors have come from organizations including New York Mental Health Counselors Association, City Pro Group, the United Nations, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Borough Historian-Ron Schweiger, NYS Education Department, NY1 News, NYPIRG, and the U.S. House of Representatives. The center also hosts mentor luncheons and networking nights as another way to connect students with alumni.

Career Workshops and Panels

The Magner Career Center and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences bring back successful alumni to serve as speakers and participants in mentor luncheons and networking nights. Past participants include City Research Scientist at NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, Founder of Linda Konner Literary Agency, Former NYC Assembly Member Rhoda Jacobs, and a Representative from Sustainable Energy for All initiative at the United Nations. Events and programs specific for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences have included: Environmental, Urban Sustainability, and Socially Conscience Careers and Internships, Careers with Social Impact, Getting into a Graduate Speech-Pathology Program, NY Times Mentoring Event, Liberal Arts Boot Camp, Symposium on the Publishing Industry, Peace Corps Information Session, Education, Non Profit and Social Impact Internships, City Year Information Session, and Careers for Liberal Arts Majors.

Company Visits

Learn first-hand about a profession of your interest and its career requirements by visiting an organization’s office. Past visits have been to organizations including Ms. Foundation for Women, Penguin, Teach for America, MSG, Yelp, City Year, American Museum of Natural History, Simon and Schuster, Chiccos, Essence Magazine, NYC Government Agencies, the United Nations, Daily News, Etsy, American Heart Association, and Columbia University. The visits are often hosted by Brooklyn College alumni.
