Eric Alterman is a CUNY Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism. He is also "The Liberal Media" columnist for The Nation, and the author of eleven books, including Lying in State: Why Presidents Lie and Why Trump is Worse (2020). He has been a columnist for The Guardian, The Forward, Moment, MSNBC and Rolling Stone, and a contributor to The New Yorker and The Atlantic, among other publications. Alterman is a former senior fellow at the Center for American Progres and the World Policy Institute and served on the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. He has been a media fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, a fellow of the Schusterman Foundation at Brandeis and a fellow of the Society of American Historians. Alterman is also a winner of the George Orwell Prize, the Stephen Crane Literary Award and the Mirror Award for media criticism (twice). He graduated from Cornell (BA), Yale (MA) and Stanford (Ph.D).
