Alex Vitale

I was born in Houston, TX, and went to Hampshire College from 1984 to 1989. From 1990 to 2003 I was on the staff of the San Francisco Coalition on Homelessness, where I headed up their work on developing and preserving health care and social services programs and defended the civil rights of people living on the streets and in shelters. In 1993 I came to New York to study at the CUNY Gradute Center, where I received my Ph.D. in 2001. I live in Brooklyn and am active in a number of community organizations. I am also an elected officer in the faculty union, the Professional Staff Congress-CUNY.

Areas of Expertise:
I teach courses in Criminology, Sociology of Law, Social Movements, and Political Sociology.

My research interests include community policing, the policing of demonstrations and civil disorder, urban politics and economics, and social movements.
