Mara Schvarzstein obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in the Department of Molecular Genetics, where she investigated mechanisms of sexual fate specification and gonadogenesis using the C. elegans model organism. She continued her interest in sexual reproduction during her postdoctorate at Stanford University in the Department of Developmental Biology. At Stanford, she used C. elegans to investigate the regulation of several key steps in meiosis that are critical for accurate chromosome inheritance in oocytes, spermatocytes and the zygote. Schvarzstein arrived at Brooklyn College in 2014. The Schvarzstein lab focuses on uncovering mechanisms promoting accurate chromosome and centrosome inheritance in meiosis, and importantly, the consequences when errors in these mechanisms arise.
Education:
Ph.D., University of Toronto - 2005 (Molecular and Medical Genetics)
M.Sc., University of Toronto - 1997 (Botany)
B.Sc., University of Toronto - 1995 (Plant Molecular Biology and Plant Pathology)
Areas of Expertise:
Chromosome and centrosome inheritance during the cell divisions that give rise to oocytes and sperm; chromosome structure and dynamics; regulation of protein function by phosphorylation and proteolytic processing; protein-protein interactions regulating developmental processes.
