Kennet E. Flores was born in Costa Rica and grew up in a small village near the historical town of Nicoya in the Nicoya Peninsula. At the age of 14, Flores moved to the city of San Jose (Costa Rica), where he attended high school and college. Moving in the same direction of the emerging country he attended to competitive Technology and Engineering Catholic High School. However, at the end of high school he surprised his family and friends when he decides to shift gears and enrolled in geology program in college. After earning his bachelor's and licentiate degrees , he moved to Europe for a one-year international exchange student program but ended up enrolled in a graduate school program at Université de Lausanne in Switzerland, from which he received his Ph.D. Subsequently, he joined the American Museum of Natural history as a postdoctoral research and educational fellow.
Education:
Ph.D. in Geosciences and Environment, Université de Lausanne, Switzerland - 2010 (Geology, Geochemistry and Geodynamics)
DEA in Earth Sciences, Université de Lausanne, Switzerland - 2006 (Oceanic crustal terranes and arc-derived sediments)
Lic. in Geology, Universidad de Costa Rica, Costa Rica - 2003 (Tectono-stratigraphy)
B.Sc. in Geology, Universidad de Costa Rica, Costa Rica - 2002 (Geology and Volcanology)
Areas of Expertise:
Kennet is a geologist specializing in plate tectonics and geodynamics of subduction zones. He is a self-proclaimed field regional geologist who applies various techniques, including structural geology, geochemistry, metamorphic petrology, geochronology and sedimentology, to develop geodynamic scenarios and plate tectonic models. His other foci are the evolution and modeling of the plate tectonics of convergent margins and the exhumation of HP/LT mélanges and belts around the world.
