Brenda Foley

Visiting Professor


Brenda Foley is the Carol L. Zicklin Endowed Chair in the Honors Academy and visiting professor of theater. Brenda's interdisciplinary work explores the links between gender, performance, and disability. Her book, Undressed for Success: Beauty Contestants and Exotic Dancers as Merchants of Morality (Palgrave), traces the historical performance connections between beauty pageants and striptease and her recent project, Forever Unknown, employs archival research from nineteenth-century asylums to excavate stories of women who were forcibly institutionalized. She is a veteran Equity actress and a recipient of the Carbonell Award for Best Actress, the CLIR Mellon Fellowship in Original Source Research, winner of the 2016 British Theatre Challenge, and named to the 2017 Bechdel Group New Play Development Series and Athena Theatre Playwriting Group (NYC). Brenda comes to Brooklyn College from Marlboro College, Vermont, where she is professor of theater and gender studies.
