Laura A. Rabin is a Professor of Psychology at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center. Her research focuses on the cognitive and neurophysiological changes associated with preclinical dementia stages. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is preceded by a transitional phase known as mild cognitive impairment, during which individuals present with cognitive deficits and subjective cognitive complaints that reflect underlying neurodegeneration. Dr. Rabin works to characterize mild cognitive impairment and its possible precursor condition, in which individuals present with subjective cognitive decline in the context of intact neuropsychological functioning to facilitate earlier diagnosis and intervention. At Brooklyn College, Dr. Rabin also teaches and mentors students at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels and engages in educational grantsmanship and research. She maintains a clinical practice focused on older adults with various cognitive and psychological disturbances.
Education:
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Dartmouth Medical School - 2005 (Neuropsychology & Neuroimaging)
Ph.D., Fordham University - 2002 (Psychology, Clinical)
M.A., Jewish Theological Seminary of America - 1995 (Interdisciplinary Jewish Studies)
Master of Studies , Oxford University - 1994 (Judaism in the Greco-Roman Period)
B.A., Northwestern University - 1992 (Psychology)
Areas of Expertise:
Dr. Rabin seeks to characterize subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in otherwise healthy older adults from a neuropsychological perspective and determine the cognitive and neurophysiological variables that predict transition to dementia. Because research on SCD lacks a standardized definition and assessment approach, Dr. Rabin also works to refine the measurement of SCD. Additional Interests include test usage among neuropsychologists and ecological validity of neuropsychological instruments.
