Scott Dexter's research interests center on exploring the role of computing across a range of social and humanistic phenomena: While his formal training is in computer science, his scholarship is heavily influenced by the social sciences and humanities. He is currently developing a book manuscript, tentatively titled The American Android, which traces the multiple overlapping meanings of the word--and concept--"android" from the 19th century biology of gender to the postwar "cybernetic fold." He is also director of technology for the Harry Watkins Diary project, developing a Web-based infrastructure for the transcription and editing of 1,200 pages of manuscript by about a dozen project staff.
