Gould is professor of sociology and Urban Sustainability, Brooklyn College, and professor of sociology, and earth and environmental sciences, CUNY Graduate Center. His work focuses on the political economy of environment, technology and development, and is best known for its contribution to the Treadmill of Production model of socioenvironmental dynamics. His publications examine the role of inequality in environmental conflicts, nanotechnology, urban sustainability, and ecotourism-oil extraction dynamics. He is co-author of Environment and Society: The Enduring Conflict, Local Environmental Struggles, The Treadmill of Production, and Green Gentrification: Urban Sustainability and the Struggle for Environmental Justice. He is co-editor of Twenty Lessons in Environmental Sociology, and Ten Lessons in Introductory Sociology. His current research focuses on the socio-environmental impacts of coastal climate resilience policies in urban contexts.
