Peter Taubman's scholarly work over the years has focused on how teachers' and students' psycho/social identities are constructed in schools and in educational discourses, and how these identities affect teaching and learning. Over the last decade, Taubman has focused his scholarship on analyzing the neoliberal assault on public education. His award-winning book Teaching by Numbers continues to be one of the most trenchant critiques of education reform. His book Disavowed Knowledge offers a history of the relationship between psychoanalysis and education. His work is informed by psychoanalytic theory, queer and feminist theory, and the work of Michel Foucault.
