Janet Elise Johnson is the 2023-25 Endowed Chair in Women's and Gender Studies, with an appointment at the CUNY Graduate Center in political science. Her work has appeared in The Conversation, The New Yorker, The Washington Post's Monkey Cage, The Boston Review, and The Nation, as well as in 4 scholarly books and two dozen articles and book chapters. Her most recent book, The Routledge Handbook of Gender in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia (co-edited with Katalin Fábián and Mara Lazda, 2022), won the Heldt prize for the best book in Slavic/East European/Eurasian Women's and Gender Studies from the Association for Women in Slavic Studies. She also coordinates a monthly workshop on Gender and Transformation in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia at the CUNY Grad Center (https://ceeegender.commons.gc.cuny.edu/). In 2020, she was FRIAS Senior Fellow (2019-2020) and Marie Curie Fellow of the European Union Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), University of Freiburg, Germany.
