On the faculty since 2003, Janet Elise Johnson teaches courses on Russian and other postcommunist politics, gender politics and policy, introduction to comparative politics, research methods, and professional development. From 2016 until 2021, she was the principal investigator for BC's Human Rights in Iran Unit/Impact Iran. She is a co-coordinator of the monthly workshop on Gender and Transformation: Europe (for more information, see http://gendertransformationeurope.wordpress.com/). For Spring 2020, she was FRIAS Senior Fellow (2019-2020) and Marie Curie Fellow of the European Union Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), University of Freiburg, Germany.

Areas of Expertise:
Professor Johnson's four books and more than a dozen articles or book chapters focus on gender, violence, and civil society, especially in Russia and other postcommunist societies. Her 2022 Handbook advances the social scientific study of gender in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In addition to academic scholarship, she has written for The Nation, The Washington Post's Monkey Cage, Boston Review, and The New Yorker and consults on issues related to domestic violence in Russia.
