Vanessa Perez Rosario is the author of Becoming Julia de Burgos: The Making of a Puerto Rican Icon (University of Illinois Press, 2014). Her book departs from the prevailing emphasis on Puerto Rican writer Julia de Burgos's enduring legacy as a nationalist writer to focus instead on her contributions to the development of New York Latina/o literary and visual culture. Currently, she serves as an associate investigator on the City University of New York-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals (CUNY-NYSIEB), a collaborative project of the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS) and the Ph.D. Program in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center.
