The design, production and marketing of mass-marketed and luxury products is of interest to Manlow. Her research has been focused on the creative process of fashion design and branding. She has written on and studied the area of self-presentation, identity and communication from a social psychological and semiotic standpoint. Her current research involves an investigation of the work performed by luxury sales persons, and ethnographic and interview research of artisans and workers in small luxury firms and large conglomerates. She wrote Designing Clothes in which she explored the creative process of fashion design as it unfolds in corporate fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren. She co-edited a book entitled Global Fashion Brands: Style, Luxury, History and is a section editor of The Fashion Business. She is editing a special issue on luxury production in the journal Design, Business & Society. She is one of the organizers of the In Pursuit of Luxury Conference.
