Karel Rose's doctoral dissertation, which ultimately was published as The Gift of the Spirit, discussed and provided ways in which confrontations with literature can alter understandings and perceptions of African Americans. She has continued to write and teach about issues of racism, sexism and ageism. Rose began teaching in the elementary schools of New York City and was invited at a very young age to become a lecturer at Brooklyn College. Her professional career blossomed at the college, and she remains deeply grateful for the opportunity to encounter such a diverse student population in this remarkable institution. Professor Rose is the recipient of several awards in teaching. She continues to write and publish. Her latest book is "Embracing Aging."
Education:
Ed.D., Teachers College, Columbia University - 1969 (Curriculum and Teaching)
M.A., Brooklyn College - 1959 (Elementary Education)
B.A., Brooklyn College - 1953 (English, Elementary Education)
Areas of Expertise:
Education, literature, philosophy and the arts. Rose has taught courses in these fields and continues to believe that in order to inspire students to find their better selves, they must be exposed to these fields. She is in love with teaching and hopes that some of her students will follow in her footsteps. Her publications are in the fields noted above. A favorite mantra to her students is that we come to college not only to learn to think but to learn what to think about.
