In addition to his degrees, Herman Jiesamfoek studied fine arts drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1991, he studied ballet instruction at the Vaganova Choreographic Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. From 2003 to 2007, he was adjunct assistant professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Since 2007, he has been assistant professor, and since 2014 associate professor at Brooklyn College. His ongoing ethnographic research among the Bush Negro people of Suriname resulted in several publications on the arts, aesthetics and globalization centered on issues of social and cultural homogeneity in the changing arts culture of the Bush Negro people of Suriname. His further research interest include self-discovery and self-reflection on diversity and socially just democratic issues through the arts and in developing arts practices for increased awareness of related topics such as identity, tolerance, acceptance, ambiguity, consensus and empathy.
