Areas of Expertise:
Hejtmanek investigates children identified as social misfits and the social, cultural and psychological mechanisms used to change them to fit into a particular society. She has conducted research in adolescent mental health institutions in the United States and with vulnerable youth in Rwanda and Uganda. Using ethnographic methods and an anthropological perspective, Hejtmanek continues her work on children and youth in difficult situations by researching the Child Welfare System of New York.
