James Cox was awarded a fellowship by NYU Courant Institute in 1983 and completed a Ph.D. in 1988, in the area of robotics algorithms. Since then his research has focused on problems in computer science having a significant mathematical component. He has done work in robotics algorithms, computational complexity theory, constraint programming and scientific visualization. He holds a U.S. patent. His Visualozation work was supported by a $2,000,000 NIST/ATP grant (to a private firm where he served as chief research scientist), and resulted in a system that can efficiently perform semiautomatic segmentation of large medical images, including segmentation of soft tissue tumors. He is also interested in algorithmic information theory, search in A.I., NLP, and randomized algorithms. Cox's industrial experience includes GMAC, and consulting work for the former Montage Group Ltd., American Healthware, and other companies.
