Education:
Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania - 1981 (Physics, General)
B.S., National Taiwan University - 1973 (Physics)
Areas of Expertise:
Raymond Tung's research is focused on (1) Interface control: the experimental control of electronic properties at materials interfaces through the use of interlayers and unconventional techniques; and (2) simple model calculations, hitherto used only in molecular chemistry, can be applied to material interfaces. In particular, partitioning methods based on charge density are expected to allow us to understand the chemistry at material interfaces and learn how to design interfaces better.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
Rotation Proposals: Students are welcome to do rotations in Tung's laboratory. Rather than giving students projects to finish in short periods of time, the emphasis here will be to gain experience on techniques they will need to learn anyway. Students who are experimentally inclined will get to understand and be able to operate a number of experimental tools, including basic vacuum techniques, surface analysis tools, semiconductor device characterization, scanning probes, etc. Students who are interested in theory can use a number of state-of-the-art software packages running either in house or on collaborators' machines.
