Education:
Ph.D., City University of New York Graduate Center - 1987 (Electrical Engineering)
Areas of Expertise:
Designing, fabricating and characterizing semiconductor optoelectronic devices based on the fundamental understanding of semiconductor crystal structures, electronic states and electron-photon interactions in semiconductors.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
Shum's renewed research interest focuses on the exploratory work from novel materials synthesis to device innovation using known physics. Currently there are three funded research projects (available on Shum's website) and a few other active projects for attracting external research funding. Shum's nanophotonics laboratory is equipped with a few essential experimental apparatuses for measuring photoluminescence/electroluminescence spectra, photoluminescence excitation spectra, Raman spectra, absorption/transmission spectra, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. Through the shared equipment on the campus, this laboratory is also capable of synthesizing new materials and their nano-structures. Students in the Ph.D./master's program are welcome to discuss their ideas with Shum and to explore the capability of this research laboratory, located in 149 Ingersoll Hall Extension.
