AMACS
Archaeological Materials and Cartographic Sciences
The AMACS project developed out of the analyses planned for the Mapping the Bronze Age Metallurgy project, currently under review for funding by the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
While the Principal Investigators realized that the "Mapping" project can provide good initial data to test the organization, technology and abilities of the collaborating scientists, it was apparent that a longer-term, expanded, collaborative workgroup that dealt with wider problems of archaeological materials science would be beneficial to all.
No such collaborative group exists at CUNY. With the dissolution of MASCA, the University of Pennsylvania's archaeological materials science center, last year, archaeology has lost one of the few such dedicated groups in the country. AMACS can utilize existing CUNY personnel and technology in its pilot phase and has the potential for expansion with future funding as other CUNY scientists and projects come aboard.
