I believe that the strongest public health education is one that is rooted in an understanding of science, history and populations. I recognize that learning is incremental, built slowly, and anchored with an experience-based educational process. I believe that part of my teaching role is to help students question more thoroughly and to think more critically. Wherever possible, I use real data and current examples to make coursework as applied as possible. My community and managerial experiences have contributed strongly to my research interests in the area of substance abuse treatment dissemination and implementation studies. Working within communities framed my understanding of and commitment to urban health and initiated my research interests related to the intersection of social context and health.
