Prof. Hainline is a developmental and cognitive psychologist with degrees from Brown and Harvard Universities. She served for over a dozen years as Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College. She has done developmental behavioral neuroscience research on infant vision, the assessment of early visual disorders and studies of the oculomotor system. Her current research interests focus on how people learn, particularly in higher education. Projects include studies of the development of scientific reasoning, the effectiveness of different types of STEM pedagogy, and the psychological issues confronted by under-represented students in academic settings. She is currently PI/PD on several federally-funded programs to support under-represented students to pursue research careers in STEM, including programs for under-represented students who are transferring to Brooklyn College to study STEM, as well as programs to provide professional development for post-doctoral fellows.
Education:
Ph.D., Harvard University - 1973 (Psychology, Developmental)
M.A., Harvard University - 1972 (Psychology, Developmental and Social/Personality)
B.A. (magna cum laude with honors), Brown University - 1969 (Psychology)
Areas of Expertise:
How people learn to 'think like a scientist'
Psychological factors for under-represented student success in college STEM classes
The psychological basis for effective methods of STEM teaching and methods to involve more undergraduates in STEM research
The development of infant vision, perception and cognition
