Richard Magliozzo recieved his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Hunter College. He did his postdoctoral training at Columbia University, Department of Biochemistry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology and Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He is the Levy-Kosminsky Professor in Physical Chemistry (2004-10).
Education:
Ph.D., Graduate School & University Center - 1981 (Biochemistry)
Areas of Expertise:
Magliozzo teaches biochemistry, physical biochemistry and enzymology. His expertise lies in physical biochemistry of metalloproteins and metalloenzymes, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, rapid reaction kinetics (optical stopped-flow and rapid freeze-quench methods.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
Biochemistry/Chemistry Ph. D. Program mentor (subdisciplines physical, inorganic, biophysical). Magliozzo's research involves defining structure/function of metalloenzymes using spectroscopy and kinetics measurements, focused on catalase-peroxidase (KatG) a heme enzyme from M. tuberculosis. Antibiotic resistance in TB-infected people arises from mutations in the gene for the KatG enzyme. Wild-type and drug resistance mutant KatG enzymes are being studied. His lab group comprises postdocs, chemistry/biochemistry Ph.D. and M.A. students, undergraduates and high school students, and is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/NIH, NSF, CUNY. Collaborations: resonance Raman, crystallography, theoretical chemistry labs. In lab rotations, students learn bacterial culture, molecular biology, protein purification, HPLC, rapid kinetics, EPR in biology, radical enzyme reactions, ITC, enzymology, drug chemistry and chemical calculations.
