Education:
Ph.D., Oxford University, United Kingdom - 1989 (Molecular Biology)
Areas of Expertise:
The long-term goals of He's lab are elucidating how neurons in the nervous system are formed and organized into functional circuits during animal development. They utilize a combination of methods, including molecular and cell biology, genetics, advanced microscopic imaging and transgenic techniques. Together, these approaches offer a promising path to advancing our understanding about the structure and function of the central nervous system.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
He is interested in the development of the brain, and the lab uses multiple approaches ranging from molecular cell biology to genetics to developmental biology. Rotating students have the opportunity to conduct research using some of the most advanced techniques available, including recombinant DNA manipulation, synthesizing genetic background, analyzing gene functions, live animal tissue imaging and advanced confocal microscopy. Potential rotation projects include: (1) constructing plasmids for expression and mutagenesis; (2) analyzing mutated animals for functional defects; (3) characterizing neural connectivity and lineage in the brain; and (4) building cell type specific makers using fluorescent proteins such as GFP, RFP and others. These projects will offer unique opportunities to experience firsthand the power of various techniques as well as to enrich individual's knowledge and judgment in one of the most active research fields, developmental biology.
