Education:
Ph.D., Syracuse University - 1987 (Physical Chemistry)
Areas of Expertise:
Dowd investigates the role of the protein osteocalcin in bone mineral properties during lead toxicity and low Mg2+ diets. She also investigates the molecular mechanism of how gap junctions between cells function and how they are altered in deafness and disease.
Doctoral Rotation Projects:
Research focuses on investigating the role of the protein osteocalcin in bone during lead toxicity and/or low Mg2+ diets. Mineral and matrix properties are examined in wild-type and osteocalcin knock-out mice using Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging and Micro-computed tomography.

Awards, Honors and Fellowships
NIH 1RO1-GM098584-01A1, for "Structure-function Relation of Connexin Disease Mutations." Principal investigator. Sept. 1, 2012 - Aug. 31, 2016; $109,468 per year. In this grant I investigate structural alterations in the N-termini of Connexin gap junction molecules in diseases such as deafness, fatal skin disease and neuropathy. I use NMR spectroscopy to produce structural data of these molecules, which are then analyzed with functional data showing alterations in gap junctions observed in these diseases. The structural and functional data may provide insight into the etiology of these diseases as well as molecular mechanistic information on gap junction assembly and gating. (Grants and Fellowships) 2012
NIH GM46889, for "Structure-Function Studies of Gap Junctions" Terry Dowd, principal investigator, subcontract. $118,000 total direct costs, April 1, 2006-March 31, 2010. (Grants and Fellowships) 2006
NIH/NIEHS 2 R01 ES009032-06A2, for "The Effect of Pb2+ Toxicity at the Molecular Level." Principal investigator. $650,000 total direct costs; Dec. 1, 2004-Nov. 30, 2011. (Grants and Fellowships) 2004
