Karl Sandeman is interested in how we may tailor phase transitions in so-called functional materials for either the efficient use of energy, such as in refrigeration, or its efficient conversion, such as in power generation. His studies require an understanding of the relationship between structure and function at all length-scales and a holistic research approach that combines experimental and theoretical tools. He coordinated the "DRREAM" and "SSEEC" grants on magnetic cooling, funded by the European Commission under Framework Programme 7 and was a faculty member at Imperial College London from 2009-2015. He was also a Royal Society University Research Fellow from 2005 to 2013, initially at the University of Cambridge and latterly at Imperial College. Karl served as a director of studies in physics at Churchill College, Cambridge between 2004 and 2009.
