First Annual Woodwind Day a Hit!

November 25, 2014

On Friday, November 7, the Conservatory hosted its first Woodwind Day and, based on the enthusiasm of the participants, it is hoped that this will become an annual event. Organized by faculty clarinetist and Woodwind Coordinator Marianne Gythfeldt, the event welcomed students from area high schools as far away as Nassau County for a full day of workshops, master classes, concerts, pizza, playing, and general music-making with the Conservatory's fine woodwind faculty and special guest, oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz of the world-renowned Imani Winds. The students were also afforded the opportunity to meet with representatives of various instrument and repair companies (Vandoren clarinet and saxophone accessories and supplies, Frobig Wind Repair, Diplomatte Instruments, and Weiner Music), which presented a fun opportunity to try out different instruments. It was an all-around enjoyable experience for all who participated and we look forward to next year's event, in which we hope to include brass players as well.
